As I mentioned in an earlier entry, I have spent the past three months compiling the catalogue for the Annual Gala Dinner and Art Auction—an event that will take place November 6 at The Vancouver Club. I’m just putting the finishing touches on the manuscript and, since this is my last week here, it seems like a good time to bring everyone up to speed on how preparations are going.
Almost all the artworks have arrived by now and some of my favorites are those by Michael Morris, Roy Arden and Elizabeth McIntosh. The auction committee has also just finalized whose work will be included in the live auction that takes place at the beginning of the event.
Besides the works by the artists I just mentioned, there are also many by less well-known, but no less impressive, artists for whom the auction will provide good exposure. These run the gamut from critically engaged conceptual works to sculptures of silk and copper, to still lifes.
Some standout examples of the former would be: Andrew Dadson’s Tie Dye (2010), a black monochrome made by tie-dying a t-shirt with the same UV sensitive ink used in the recent Iraqi elections; or Fabiola Carranza’s Liberte Ou La Morte (2010), a replica of the recently rediscovered Declaration of Independence of Haiti (the original of which, had long thought to have been lost). Notable in the latter category is Mike Grill’s photograph, Bunch of Asparagus (2006)—a carefully observed detail from a quiet domestic scene.
